This is the first of a brand new series selected, crafted and signed by Stewart Bowman, the distillery's manager, and there will be 4 in all. Edition 1 is entitled "Remnant Renegade" and is a snapshot in time of the world of Arran single malts over the years. The name 'Remnant Renegade' is a tribute to the casks specially selected for this bottling that have been kept over the years and which, until now, have not been able to fulfil their 'destiny' by becoming a bottled whisky. Remnant casks often contain a small quantity of whisky left over from bottling. Very often, this liquid can be forgotten because it is not enough to constitute another bottling in its own right. This cuvée therefore represents a veritable kaleidoscope of casks, ranging from some old casks from 1997 to more recent casks filled in 2017. It is a blend of ex-Hogshead sherry casks, Butts sherry casks and bourbon barrels, with the greatest concentration of casks coming from the 2010-2012 period for this edition. Bringing together so many different casks, all of which have aged slightly differently over the years, is no easy task. For master distiller Stewart Bowman, it was a delicate balancing act, ensuring that the Arran DNA was retained and recognisable, given that the combination of bourbon and sherry casks has always been the cornerstone of the distillery.
