Always on the lookout for the subtle, balanced and little-known world of low-fermentation beers, the French brewery Galibot is rediscovering a beer style that is not very common in France: Helles. Helles (German for "clear") is a style of bottom-fermented German beer brewed in Bavaria, with a medium alcohol content (4.5 and 6% alcohol) and a taste similar to that of Pilsner-type beers, but less hoppy and more malty.
With its bright yellow colour, Helles de Galibot is a little concentrate of grain and caramel aromas (hallmarks of Pilsen and Carapils malts). On the palate, the low bitterness leaves the product brioche, floral and thirst-quenching, with a lovely finish of honey. A simple, effective beer, whose label pays tribute to the region's former miners, who were fervent fans of this style of beer.
Pairings: Asparagus tapenade & veal salad, marinated prawns & guacamole.
