Created at the beginning of the 20th century by the Barbieri brothers, Aperol quickly become a popular aperitif in Italy; but it was not until 1950, with the invention of the ‘Spritz’ cocktail (4cl Aperol, 6cl Prosecco and a dash of soda), that it became really famous. Made from a base of bitter oranges, gentian, rhubarb and cinchona, Aperol remains one of the most widely known bitters in the world; the brand is now owned by the Campari group.
