The grenadilla, passion fruit or purple fruit (Passiflora edulis) is a climbing plant of the Passifloraceae family, native to Latin America. It takes its name from the various elements of its flower, which allude to the instruments of Christ's Passion. It is cultivated for its edible pulp, known as passion fruit or maracudja (a Creole word derived from the Tupi word ‘mara kuya’).
